October Thoughts
October has always been one of my favorite months. As a Southern California native, it means local summer at the beginning of the month with Santa Ana winds that blow offshore, and calm, low surf that is perfect for an evening surf or swim. And then, towards the end of the month, fall weather and cooler nights offer the opportunity to wear the first sweaters of the season. And let's not forget Halloween, my favorite holiday except Christmas.
This month of tricks and treats, shorter days, and the transition of seasons offers awareness of the darker sides of existence. And with it, the invitation to work within and explore our own shadows. We all have an “other” within us that we often shun because we think that if we ignore it, it does not exist. We are afraid of what we consider dark or not up to the standards of our family or peers. But to be whole, we must see, honor, and accept our shadow self to achieve balance.
The path to self-improvement starts with self-acceptance.
We learn at an early age to be agreeable. We crave the acceptance of others, beginning with our family, then friend groups, and later, our partners. We do and say all of the right things to be accepted. But what if this agreeable method of living splinters us within and keeps us from exploring who and what we are capable of because we are terrified to do or say the wrong things? We become compartmentalized and shut off what might make us special, quirky or just a bit left of center. But isn't that what makes us who we are?
Easier said than done, right? Well, maybe. Depending on how willing you are to offer compassion to yourself as you would with others.
The first step is to identify the recurrent feelings you often suppress in fear of rejection or ridicule. Give these emotions a chance to come to the surface and allow yourself to feel without judgment. Sit with the uncomfortable feelings. This is a perfect time to practice a breathwork pattern that brings balance and calm. Once you have had time to process within, take time to externally express yourself by journaling or even confiding in a trusted friend.
Unrevealed shadows are heavy and cumbersome. Once brought to the light, balance can be found and a feeling of peace between the two will shine an authentic light from within.
I hope you will join us this month as we balance the light with the dark, hard work with fun, and an opportunity to discover wellness and balance along the way.
With Gratitude,
Elease
